The Shocking Evolution of Our Childhood Halloween Costumes Has Us Like, "WTF?!"

I'll admit it, I've been the Little Mermaid twice for Halloween - once when I was 5 and once when I was 21 - so you can bet my costumes looked totally different. For starters, last year I nixed the wig, sported a bandeau bra, and went for sky-high heels. When I was little, I cried as my mom forced ballet slippers onto my feet, insisting that mermaids have fins.

In other words, as we get older, we get more, well, daring with our costumes. Come Halloween, some of us seem to be inspired by that quote from Mean Girls - "In girl world, Halloween is the one night a year when a girl can dress like a total slut and no other girls can say anything about it" - even if that doesn't sound so rational.

But at what age do we start shedding the layers and slipping on the thigh-highs - and which Halloween costumes get the raciest as we grow up? Scroll down to take a look at the way some of the most beloved childhood costumes evolve, and maybe think twice about ditching some of your outfit details this year. What's a pirate without a poet blouse, anyway?
